The brain develops faster than any other time between the ages of zero and three. During this stage language learners typically acquire an understanding of up to 1,000 words. They may also learn to speak some words and begin forming short phrases, giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.

Some adjustments include simplification of language, redundancy, a higher voice pitch, and a striking number of questions.

Understanding sentences and connecting ideas, in addition to vocabulary and fluent reading of text, reading comprehension requires background knowledge, the interactive read-aloud included defining vocabulary words, providing opportunities for children to use words from the books, asking open-ended questions, and giving children the chance to talk and be heard.
